Travelling Alone: How to Build the Courage to Travel Solo
1. START WITH BABY SOLO TRAVEL STEPS
Starting small is an amazing way to build your courage to take your first solo trip overseas. As you begin to take small trips around your own country or city solo, you can start to build your confidence in your ability to travel the world solo.
Start taking baby steps by going out solo around your own city. Take yourself on solo dates. Get to know yourself and spend more time doing things that you enjoy in your own company.
I think one of the major things about feeling scared of travelling alone is the fear of being alone.
Practise solo travel
As you practise solo travel within your own city and country, it can help you build your relationship with yourself, strengthen your courage to travel alone and develop your solo travel skills. Additionally, it provides you with a chance to see if solo travel is for you and if you like it.
Here’s a story I’d love to share with you. As I moved interstate solo to live in Sydney, it was this city that inspired me to make the move to Europe. I met people from all over the world who were here on working holidays. I found it so cool! “If they can do that here, of course, I can do that abroad.
So I started exploring options on how I could make that dream a reality!
Here are some BABY steps that you can take to build your courage towards your first solo travel oVERSEAS:
- Take yourself on a solo date day doing all the things that make you happy
- Do something out of your comfort zone within your city
- Go on a solo travel car ride to a destination by yourself
- Book a solo trip to another state in your country

2. RESEARCH AND GAIN INSPIRATION FROM OTHER PEOPLE SOLO TRAVELLING
By researching and gaining inspiration from others who are doing what you would LOVE to do, it can help you reaffirm that it’s possible for you too!
Do your research on your destination ✅
Plan your travel details ✅
Have a plan B ✅
As I mentioned previously in the blog post, I moved interstate and I met incredible people from all over the world which was one of the main motivating forces that inspired me to solo travel abroad. Besides my own dream to travel the world!
You can gain inspiration from other people by watching Youtube or by reading blog posts like this one.
To add on to that, it’s a good recommendation when travelling alone to have a plan B such as an emergency fund to fly home if you end up not liking solo travel.
This can support you to ease your mind and have an “I’ve got nothing to lose” mentality.
Certainly, do your research and don’t put yourself in any destinations that are unsafe for women travelling alone.
Overall, preparing yourself in all the ways, such as mentally and preparing your budget and how you’re going to have your basic needs met, is a sure way to make you feel more secure in making moves towards your first solo adventure!
Here’s what you can start researching for your first solo trip:
- The price of everything in your destination e.g food, accommodation and activities
- The local currency
- Is it easy to get around by public transport?
- Where would you like to stay (accommodation)
- Airfare prices
- Your approximate solo travel budget
- Activities and shopping that you would like to do
- The weather in your destination for your packing list
- Safety and health precautions
- Visas

3. ACKNOWLEDGE YOUR TRAVELLING ALONE FEARS AND TRUST YOUR INNER CALLING
Okay, so let’s address the elephant in the room. When you begin to announce to your close friends and family, “Hey, I’m going to book a trip to Europe and I’m travelling alone!”
They may look at you and say, “Why are you going alone? Will you be safe?”
You may already have your own doubts and fears around travelling alone. Hearing other’s opinions and fears about solo travelling might add to your worries.
But, they don’t have to. Trust your inner calling.
A handy tip to acknowledge your fears is to write them down and sit with your emotions surrounding solo travel. Allow what comes up to come up and fully be with it.
If going on a solo travel adventure has been something that you’ve always wanted to do and more specifically to a certain country, don’t let your dreams just stay dreams.
Overall, your fears are valid. And, your fears don’t need to stop you from taking action and moving forward towards making your dreams a reality.

4. CHOOSE COURAGE
If you never try to solo travel, you’ll never know how it’ll go!
Say yes to adventure and opening your heart and eyes to what this beautiful world has on offer.
Sure, it may feel scary to adventure off on your own into the unknown. It also may be full of ‘WOW’ opportunities to widen your perspective, discover & create yourself, learn, grow and gain clarity on what you want out of your life.
Solo travelling, has been a priceless investment in my personal development journey!
You may be travelling alone, however, this does not mean you will always be alone.
If you’re open to connecting with new people and just being you, there are people out there who are just eager to meet and connect with you on your solo travels! Meet people on your solo travels by going to events, activities and places that make you happy and that you feel in resonance with. It can be as simple as the local coffee shop!
Additionally, be open to meeting people in the most unexpected ways like at the airport or in the Uber driver on the way to your next destination.
Lastly, to sum it up, you can build your courage to solo travel by leaning into courage and having faith.
If not now then when? What are you waiting for?
