Why practise/have a regular self-care routine?

  • It makes you feel good and adds to your happiness
  • Practising self-care is a great way to take care of your physical, emotional, spiritual and mental needs
  • When you take care of yourself, you are also taking care of your health
  • Self-care can also be an act of self-love
  • Self-care is overall a great way to take care of yourself

Self-care starts with you.

💖

Here are some simple self-care habits that you can incorporate into your routine to help you feel good!

Daily exercise/ movement

It’s a no-brainer that moving your body daily is an amazing habit to add into your self-care routine.

Exercise can absolutely be fun! Find ways to stay fit and healthy that you enjoy. Not only does moving your body keep you healthy and active, but it can help uplift your mood too.

Exercise doesn’t only have to mean going to the gym. There are plenty of other ways to exercise too. Including walks by the beach or in nature and doing free workouts on YouTube.

Have a morning and evening skincare routine

I love my skin-care routine as a habit for self-care. Try out a skin-care routine that works for you and that makes you feel good and beautiful.

I like to use products that honour our planet and my body; natural ingredients that are not only good for my skin but good for my health too. I gravitate towards products with fewer harmful/ synthetic ingredients.

My favourite products that I include in my skin-care routine are:

Natural eye cream

Bluem Finger Lime Repair Serum for skin barrier repair and relieving inflammation.

pH Balancing Face wash and I wash my face with the Konjac sponge from the Bluem Nurture Repair Ritual Set

Best Habits to Incorporate Into Your Self-Care Routine

For the body: I like to keep it simple and use the Bluem Soul Soap

For the face: Sukin Rosehip Hydrating Moisturiser

Hydrosoul Spritz throughout the day for a reset and refreshed feeling.

If you would like to embark on your journey towards using simpler, more natural skin-care products as a habit in your self-care routine, you can use the code LIVINGHERWAY at the checkout to receive 20% off on all Bluem products.

For Hair: I apply Moroccan Argan Oil every day or every second day.

Once a week apply a natural face mask as a habit in your self-care routine. I like to sometimes add macadamia oil to my clay face masks.

Take your daily vitamins and supplements

Taking my daily vitamins and supplements is a habit that I enjoy having in my self-care routine. It helps me stay on top of my key vitamins, nutrients and take care of my health.

I’m not going to recommened any vitamins or supplements as I believe that everyone is different and what may work for me, might not work for you.

Drink your daily water intake

Drink water! Just do it haha.

Staying hydrated is a great habit for your daily self-care routine.

I just recently started adding electrolytes to my water and I’m really liking the added benefits.

Listen to your favourite music daily

You could listen to music while you’re on the bus, driving/ commuting, when you’re working out or when you wake up in the morning. Listening to music is a sure way to boost your happiness and mood.

Here’s a playlist that I’ve made to inspire your joy and adventure. 💃🏼

Show up

Do something today that makes you feel like you are showing up.

Show up and engage with life.

This is something I remind myself of as sometimes our doubts and fear can stop or hinder us from taking action and showing up.

The act and the courage to show up every day can be an act of self-care.

Speak kindly to yourself

Sometimes, our thoughts can go unchecked throughout our days. When you’re having one of those days, it can be a great habit in your self-care routine to remind yourself to check in with how you are speaking to yourself.

Additionally, practising mindfulness can help you be more mindful of your thoughts and how you are speaking to yourself.

Journal your thoughts, affirmations and dreams & goals

I find that journalling your thoughts, dreams & goals, and positive affirmations about yourself and life, is a great habit to have in your self-care routine.

Do this as regularly as you feel necessary to keep you ‘on track’.

Don’t know where to start with journaling? Check out this Ultimate Guide For Beginners.

Express your creativity

Implementing time to express and share your creativity in your self-care routine can be a great habit for self-care.

Even though you may resist showing up in your creative pursuits to begin with, I have found that creativity really starts to flow once you actually start doing the thing.

Allow your creativity to shine and express itself. Maybe you like writing, dancing, painting or singing songs. Overall, I have found expressing my creativity to uplift my mood and add to my feeling of aliveness.

Do something daily towards your dreams- take inspired and aligned action

Do something every day towards creating and living your dream life.

Your life really is so precious.

You might as well go for it and live your life to the fullest.

Progress over perfection.

What is an action you can do today that brings you closer towards your dream life?

Take aligned and inspired action towards your dreams and dream life daily.

Take a long, warm bath

Taking long, warm baths can be such a nourishing habit to incorporate into your self-care routine.

Try adding luxurious bath bombs, bath oils or epsom salts to your bath for added relaxation and aromatherapy benefits.

Optional: Try dry body brushing before your bath! The benefits of dry body brushing may include exfoliating the skin, stimulating the lymphatic system, removing toxins and increasing circulation and energy.

Have Boundaries

Having boundaries with how you are spending your time and attention is important. Your time is finite.

For example, boundaries can be implemented with your social media usage and screen time.

Overall, boundaries as a habit in your daily self-care routine can be a great way to make you feel more happy, grounded and aligned.

Create regular vision boards

Creating regular vision boards for the life and type of lifestyle that you desire can be a great habit to implement into your self-care routine.

Vision boards can remind and inspire you to keep going after the life you dream of and to keep living your life to the fullest every day.

Lastly, vision boards can help inspire you to make the most of your life and think big.

Allow yourself to sleep!

Yes, this may seem like a simple one, but sleep is SO important. And, it really does impact our mood.

If you need to have a long sleep, let yourself. Life is long and you won’t miss out. 💚

Overall, letting yourself get the adequate sleep and rest that you need to function at your best is a great habit to include in your self-care routine.

Spend time outside in nature daily

Spending time outside in nature, getting your vitamin D and breathing in fresh air daily is a healthy habit to include in your self-care routine. It’s a lovely way to take care of yourself, feel more present and uplift your mood.

According to the American Psychological Association, spending time in nature is linked to both cognitive benefits and improvements in mood, mental health and emotional well-being.

Simple ways that you can incorporate this habit into your daily routine include:

  • Go on walks
  • Do your workout outside
  • Have your morning coffee or breakfast outside in the sun
  • Do your journalling practice, goals setting, planning or book reading outside in nature
  • Work from a park bench outside or an outdoor cafe/space if you’re able to work remotely

Have fun

Having fun is sometimes an underatted form of self-care.

Life gets to be fun.

Find moments throughout your day where you can have more fun. Or even shift into a more light-hearted, fun mindset.

Let yourself have days/ nights off (from work, chores & achieving) where you can focus on doing other things that bring you joy and that feel fun to you.

Eat food that nourishes you!

Eating food that nourishes you is a lovely form of self-care.

Your food is your fuel.

I like to eat meals that incorporate healthy fats, high protein sources, vegetables, fruit and a quality carbohydrate source.

Oh and of course dark chocolate and ice cream! It’s all about balance, your way. 😉

Quality time with your family, friends and partner

A great habit to add or continue in your self-care routine is spending quality time with your family, friends and partner.

Good chats, good laughs and good times with friends, family and your partner, simply said, just feels so good.

Overall, filling up your social cup and natural human need for connection is a great habit to have in your self-care routine.

Ways that you can incorporate this habit into your self-care routine:

  • Phone a friend
  • Facetime your parents
  • Catch up and meet in person

Check-in with your breathing and nervous system

Take moments throughout your day to slow down and check in with how your nervous system is feeling.

Sometimes, we can get on autopilot and forget to check how our nervous system is feeling. Are we breathing properly?

Take moments when you remember throughout your day to take a couple of deep breaths in and out.

You may like to put one hand on your chest and one on top of your lower abdomen.

Taking deep breaths throughout your day can be a great habit to implement into your self-care routine as it can help you become more present, slow down your breath and thus soothe your nervous system.

Schedule time in your routine for rest and relaxation

Take time out for rest and relaxation when you need. We are not meant to be doing all the time.

It’s okay to simply be.

Making sure that you are making time for relaxation, rest and recovery when you need it is an excellent habit to have in your self-care routine so that you can continue to function sustainably and not burn out.

Keep a clean and tidy environment

Making your bed every morning and keeping a clean and tidy environment is a healthy habit to have in your self-care routine.

I know that every time I just do the dishes instead of leaving them until later, my future self always thanks me!

When your space is clean, clutter-free and organised this can influence your mindset.

Evidence suggests that having a messy, cluttered environment can create stress and interfere with your ability to concentrate, at least for some people.’

Reduce mental overwhelm by planning and setting goals

Preparing yourself and feeling organised by planning can be a great habit to have in your self-care routine.

For example, having a planner, planning out my week and having a rough idea of my goals for my short-term and long-term future have helped me have a clearer direction of where I’m headed and it makes me feel more grounded.

Additionally, when I set goals and plan, it helps reduce my feelings of mental overwhelm and anxiety, because I have a clearer direction of where I’m headed and the action steps that I can take daily to make it happen.

Whilst I don’t believe you can plan your whole life away, I do believe that having a plan and goals can be a supportive habit to have in your self-care routine.

Say no when you want/need to

Saying no when you want and need to is a great habit to incorporate into your self-care routine.

It may not always feel comfortable to say no, but no is necessary.

Unfortunately, we can’t be everything to everyone and do it all at once. For example, it’s okay to choose yourself and say no to going out when you need rest or simply don’t want to.

Do something every day that makes you feel happy and joyous

Doing something every day that makes you feel happy, alive and joyous is a great habit to have in your self-care routine.

Reminder: Don’t wait until tomorrow to be happy. Do what makes you happy now. You truly have that power within you.

Doing what makes you happy or even reminding yourself to shift into a more happier mindset during your day, can be a great habit to incorporate into your self-care routine.

May you allow yourself to Be Happy!

One regret in the top 5 regrets of the dying was: I wish that I had let myself be happier.

Practise mindfulness and gratitude

Coming back to being grateful for all that you already have in your life is a beautiful practice to have in your self-care routine.

Practising gratitude can be so beneficial and supportive towards your happiness.

What are 3 things things that you are grateful for right now?

Additionally, taking moments throughout your life and day to practise mindfulness is a wholesome habit to incorporate into your self-care routine.

Simple Mindfulness Strategies:

  • Mindfully eating
  • Practising gratitude
  • Taking a few deep breaths in and out
  • Waking up mindfully and setting your intentions for the day
  • Journalling out your thoughts and feelings

I hope that these habits have inspired and supported your self-care routine!
